i-40 Roadtrip: Holbrook, AZ

After leaving the Grand Canyon and Williams, AZ, we drove 90 miles to Holbrook, AZ.

Sleep.  I wish I could tell you that we stayed in this badass Wigwam Motel, but, alas, the travel gods were not with us and the place was at full occupancy when we called.  Their usual price is $52.00/nt + tax.

Instead, we stayed at a very clean Motel 6.

Sleep.  Motel 6 in Holbrook appears to be pretty new.  Very clean, and a steal at $44.61 a night!  Highly recommended within its price category, particularly if you can’t get in at the more novel Wigwam Motel.

The Petrified Forest is what draws people to Holbrook.   Petrified National Forest is located about 30 miles from the strip of motels.

Where to Enter.  Don’t be an idiot (like me) and enter through the North Entrance off the i-40 E.  My intentions were to go out of my way to stop by the Vistor’s Center, which is located at the North Entrance, in order to obtain maps and pamphlets.  The Visitor’s Center is really more of a gift shop and the maps are provided by the ticket person at BOTH the North and South Entrances.  Therefore, if you are east-bound, you will save time and gas by taking the 180 E from Holbrook to the South Entrance.  Drive north through the park and hop on the i-40 E towards New Mexico.

Admission Price.  It’s $10 for a vehicle.

Time Required.  The drive is 28 miles between the North and South Entrances.  The time required depends on how much you want to see.  My BF and I spend about 1.5-2.0 hrs here, but we could have done it in less if we’d entered from the South.

Handy Links.  Here’s the best map of Petrified Forest. If you’d like to see my recommendations for specific trails and sights along the way, check out my yelp review.
